The Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, Dr Desmond Tutu, who was reported to be recovering in hospital “in good spirits” after a successful surgery has died in the wee hours of Friday.
Desmond Tutu was 84 years.
Archbishop Tutu has battled recurring infections since mid-2015 and was admitted weeks ago for treatment to control the infection.
Tutu’s daughter and Former Skeem Saam actress Natasha Thahane broke the news on her granddad’s death on facebook and deleted it after receiving over 2000 likes and comments.
The reason about the deletion is not yet known but many have suggested that she is waiting on the family to release official statement.
Late last week, Times Live reported that Tutu’s family had said he had been discharged from hospital, only for the family to issue a statement a few days later revealing that he had been re-admitted.
Desmond Mpilo Tutu is a South African social rights activist and retired Anglican bishop who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid.
